What are Some Good Sample Sections for an Executive Resume -
What are Some Good Sample Sections for an Executive Resume -Tips for Writing an Executive Resume Sections to IncludeThe final version of your resume should absolutely be broken up into clear sections, delineating topics and making it easier for a hiring manager or recruiter to read. However, determining which sections you want to include before you sit down to write can greatly help you in the process of writing your executive resume. While there is no exact recipe for sections to include, there are some that you may not have considered using that can help strengthen your resume. So what are some good sample sections for an executive resume? Below, I delve into seven of them. The sample sections I discuss below dont all have to be included (though Ill point out the ones that absolutely should be) but can help get you abfluged as you outline your resume and begin working with formatting to see what best presents your information in an attention-getting manner. To see examples of these sections (and others) in action, head over to our resume samples page to explore resume samples from different industries and positions.Personal Branding StatementLets start at the top. Well, sort of at the topyour name and contact information should be at the absolute top of the resume. Directly below that, though, you should include a personal branding anschauung about what sets you apart as an executive. Notice I dont call this section a career objectivein this day and age your resume should NOT have a career objective. Instead, a personal branding meinung that establishes your professional bona fides and potential for contributions to the prospective employer while conveying a bit of your personality or professional brand to the hiring manager should be the first thing they read at the top of your resume. How is this different from a career objective? A career objective tells them what you want. A personal branding gutachten is a summary that tells them who you are and why hirin g you will benefit them. Its focused on the employers needsnot what you want. Remember, your resume is a marketing document.Amid a sea of resumes with extensive work history, a potential employer will be glad to see a glimpse of fresh information with a personal branding statement that speaks to them. When youre applying for an executive position, your resume is up against plenty of others who have lengthy professional experienceuse a personal branding statement at the top of your resume to get attention and stand out from the pack right away. Again, remember that the point of your resume is marketing yourself.Work ExperienceObvious, right? But what might not be obvious is that you dont have to call it work experience. An effective executive resume isnt a comprehensive chronological list of job titles, years of experience, and duties/responsibilities. Instead, it should touch on the most relevant and impressive highlights of your career.Your master resume should be comprehensive, bu t as you tailor your resume for different executive positions the experience and achievements you highlight should differ. Some may focus more directly on what a job description asks for, and for others you may be left on your own to decide what to include based on your knowledge of the company and the position youre applying to. First and foremost, include impressive and relevant experience.Even if you are creating a chronological resumeand not a hybrid of a functional resume and a chronological resumeyou dont need to include every last detail about your employment. A resume should go back 15 years at most, and the descriptions of your accomplishments and experience within the different jobs youve held dont need to be comprehensiveagain, impressive and relevant are two words to keep in mind here.As the information in the section differs, you can choose from different headings for the section as well. For example, consider using Career Highlights in place of simply Work Experience o r Professional Experience. To make your resume even a little more keyword-friendly, try using Executive Experience if that fits with the information within the section.EducationBy the time youve reached the executive level of your career, do you still need to include your education on a resume? I recommend that you doespecially if you have an advanced degree. For the most part, I advise putting the education section at the end of your resume. Thats where prospective employers and executive recruiters tend to look for it.While education is important, accomplishments and experience are more likely to keep a recruiter reading than seeing that you earned a BA in 1992. If the job description specifically asks for an master of business administration or an advanced degree in marketing, or whatever sector the job is in, you can put those credentials next to your name at the top or include it in your summary so that a hiring manager can immediately see that you fit the most basic qualificat ions for the job before they go on to being impressed by the rest of the information in your executive resume. This isnt a hard and fast rule for everyone but something to consider if the degree is an essential part of the requirements for the position.Certifications, Professional Development, AffiliationsIn addition to listing your degree(s), you should also include relevant certifications or professional development experiences on your executive resume. Doing so demonstrates that no matter how far you have come in your career you are always willing to learn and to take steps to improve yourself so that you can do better work for your employer.Similarly, any affiliations you have with professional organizationsor even relevant community organizationsshow your dedication to your profession and commitment to ongoing learning and networking that can benefit a company. This section doesnt necessarily have to be separate from your education section, as seen in the example belowTestimoni als/QuotesBut what about the References Available Upon Request line? Or, listing reference contacts or including reference letters if requested? Of course, do whatever is required based on the job postingbut dont be shy about including actual testimonial quotes about your skills and abilities on the resume itself.A sidebar with two to three quotes from former supervisors or impressive colleagues that solidly speak to your abilities is an easy way to get important and effective information quickly and directly in front of the prospective employer or recruiter who is reading your resume. You can also present testimonials and quotes visually by using bordered text boxes or text boxes with a background color that are placed in their own section within your resume, or alongside relevant information in your experience or strengths section.Achievements/AccomplishmentsBetween your branding statement and your professional experience / career highlights section, you should have addressed most, if not all, of the relevant achievements of your career. However, if there are particularly impressive accomplishments that you want to call attention to you can include a separate section in which you focus directly on these. When you make it clear to a potential employer that you have tangible achievements to point to that have benefited your past employer, they will be able to see how you can bring value to their business.Expertise/Skills/StrengthsLike your achievements and accomplishments, some of these should be built directly into your branding statement and your work experience / career highlights section. However, as with the education section, if the job description calls for specific skills or strengths, you need to show early on and clearly in your resume that you have those qualifications. In this case, a separate section for your expertise, skills, or strengths is a good idea for making koranvers that your executive resume is effective.Including a section for your expe rtise, skills, and strengths, or any combination thereof is also an opportunity to make sure that the employer sees your value. If your expertise is especially unique and relevant to the position for which you are applying, highlight it with its own section, and put it near the top of your resumeperhaps even combined with or right below your branding statement. An important note any skills section of your resume needs to focus on hard skills and technical skills, not soft skills like effective communicator or detail-oriented. These have no place on an executive resume. How to Incorporate These Sample Sections and Other SectionsAs I mentioned earlier, the resume samples section of our website can provide you with inspiration on arranging sections effectively within your executive resume. In looking through a sample executive resume or a few of them, you might also notice infographics and color to help offset the sections, improve readability, and emphasize important information. Includi ng visuals is one of my top recommendations for creating a modern, effective executive resume. You dont have to go overboard, but even a visual or two can go a long way in differentiating your resumeand youfrom the pile of resumes sitting on a hiring managers desk. Not all of your resumes will include the same sections and the same information, nor should they. Play around with the sections and the formatting to create resumes that fit the job and the industry you are applying to. If this sounds time-consuming, thats because it is. Starting with a master resume can help, though, and once you land that interview and get the executive position you want, the time commitment will be worth it.But how do I fit all this information on my resume? You know you dont have to fit every bit of information about your employment history on your resume, but you still probably have a lot that is relevant that you need to include. Dont feara limited one-page resume is not necessary. A two-page resume or even a three-page resume format is perfectly fine (and even expected by recruiters and employers) for an executive candidate. That said, keep your cover letter to one page, though. If writing a resume just isnt something you want to take on, even though youre ready to advance your career, consider using a professional resume writing tafelgeschirr like Great Resumes Fast to have a talented resume writer do the work for you. How To Disconnect From Work During Your Maternity Leave
How To Disconnect From Work During Your Maternity Leave Your office, the projects, employer goals and expectations none of it stops simply because your baby arrives. The working world will go right on spinning while youre in labor and on maternity leave, and thats okay. Normal, even. What you probably dont want is for your own world with baby in it to keep right on spinning in sync with that work world. My baby was born 5 days ago, a mom from the Mindful Return course recently wrote to me. And Im mucksmuschenstill answering work emails. I dont know how much longer Im going to be able to do this. I wasnt supposed to be online during my leave. However she got into this pickle, this new mom now had to extract herself from it if she wanted to save her own sanity and protect her family time. My first instruction to her was to communicate clearly to re-establish expectations Yes, I know Ive been answering e-mails, but Im signing off now.Disconnecting 100 percent may or may not be your goal . Whatever your hopes are, though, its worth being intentional and explicit about them. What are some ways you can set yourself up to successfully disconnect from work while you are on maternity leave? Here are my top five tips1. Plan the heck out of your leave.Several months before you go out on leave, departure giving thought to what projects will be in the works around your due date and who can take them over. Document processes you complete on a regular basis, and work with your teams to determine to whom youll be making handoffs.Introduce your maternity leave replacements to your key contacts, so they can reach out directly. The less folks need you to get answers to their questions, the easier it will be for you to disconnect.2. Communicate expectations clearly.Talk to your supervisor and your HR department about their expectations around your leave and how those align with your own. For my first maternity leave, I wasnt supervising anyone and found it quite easy to disconnect completely. The second time around, though, was a different story, as I was managing another employee. The plan we came up with was that I would be completely disconnected for one month, and then after that I would speak with her once a week to address urgent issues and answer key questions. For any emergencies, everyone knew to text me instead of emailing. Once youve thought through your plan, consider creating a formal document for your employer to set out these expectations clearly. 3. Tackle time-sensitive tasks (like employee reviews) before you leave. Things like review cycles dont stop while youre on leave, and the people you manage still need to get feedback from you. If you know your reviews of your direct reports will be due while youre on leave, write and submit them beforehand. Not only will your employer appreciate your advance planning, but then the task wont be hanging over your head while you are gone.4. Stick to the boundaries youve set.How you behave teaches others an important lesson about how you will behave. If you respond to just this one email, your colleagues will likely expect a response to the next one. And the next. To quote Bren Brown, choose discomfort over resentment when youre deciding whether or not to check in or respond.5. Remember that you are still valued even if you are not irreplaceable. We all want to feel important and irreplaceable, which is why we can sometimes be our own worst enemies when it comes to disconnecting during maternity leave. Its good to remember, however, that everyone is ultimately replaceable in the working world as well as the fact there is no one with your exact combination of unique and wonderful skillsets. Growing your team and letting colleagues use your maternity leave to shine in new ways (perhaps even taking things off your plate that you were ready to get rid of) is an important leadership skill. You WILL be missed, mama, and your work will continue to be appreciated when you return. So take this important time for your family now. With advance planning, good, open lines of communication, and a commitment to your own boundaries, disconnecting from work during maternity leave at the level you want is indeed possible. Its worth taking these concrete steps, so you can take care of yourself and the new wonderful little human youve created.--Lori K. What to do when your top choice hasnt called with a decision
What to do when your top choice hasnt called with a decisionWhat to do when your top choice hasnt called with a decisionYou went full steam ahead on your job applications until you snagged an interview with your top choice. The meeting went well, and the hiring manager told you to expect a notification soon. You knew that soon wouldnt be three days, but a week has passed. Now, youre closing in on two weeks since the interview. Dont let anxiety over the wait convince you to make a move that may harm your shot at the position, such as aggressively following up or bluffing about another offer.Instead, follow through with these five tips for when your top choice hasnt called with an offer1. Send an email to someone rckendeckungiveIn some ways, waiting to hear from your top choice with an offer is like waiting to hear back after a first date. Youre nervous, and your hands are eager to type a hasty message to check on your status. Take a step back and ease those nerves.Send an email or mess age to a supportive friend, family member or professional in your network. Talk about your concerns, but also about what you loved and learned during the interview experience. Your support person will actively listen to you while giving you validation and easing your mind. Afterward, youll find you have a bit mora patience in waiting to hear back and maybe even the motivation to apply for other positions.2. Breathe and keep living lifeThe nerve-wracking wait may leave you stuck - upping your anxiety and stress, which can suppress your immune system. Youre more prone to getting sick when stressed, and that wont help while searching and interviewing for other openings.Practice mindful breathing to relieve stress - stop those shallow breaths, and take deep breaths to let air into your abdomen at a pace that feels natural to you. Make sure youre in a relaxed position as you breathe in and out. Dont forget about the other activities in your life as you remember to breathe. When was the last time you spent quality time with your family, kids, partner or friends? Call up your best friend for a coffee, or drive an hour to see your cousin. Do the dishes, and departure that art project youve been talking about for months. Keep living life.3. Keep up the searchFocus on the reality of the situation - you havent received an offer yet. That means that while youre still in the running, you should also keep up the search. In the process, you may even receive an offer, which you can use for negotiating your compensation if your dream employer calls you back with a job offer.Maintaining the search will also keep your mind busy as you put in new applications. Give yourself a job search structure, so that you have a few tasks at specified times to focus on each day. This approach boosts your energy and gives you a positive feeling.4. Send a Thank You noteOnce youve breathed and released your anxiety, send a thank you note to the employer if you havent already. You can send the note through an online channel youve communicated in previously, such as LinkedIn, or through the mail with a handwritten note. Which medium you choose will depend on a few factors, including time. When composing your letter, include these points of reflectionA highlight from the interviewA positive and surprising fact you learned about the companyA detail about the companys values that resonate with yoursOf course, you should also indicate your interest in possibly contributing and joining the business.5. Prepare for the worstWhile you and your family are hoping for an offer, you want to prepare for the possibility that you dont receive it. If the call comes and you dont get the position, carry your professional reputation forward by thanking the interviewer or hiring manager. Ask that they keep your records on file for future consideration and if you may reach out through LinkedIn to connect.A more difficult scenario arises when no one reaches out to you at all. Two weeks become th ree, and then a month passes. Its a possibility that reflects on the company, not you. Remain gracious and give them the benefit of the doubt by sending out a brief follow-up email with a warm and professional tone.Waiting is the worst when it comes to interviewing for a company you love. Dont let the wait drive you to check-in too much or say the wrong thing. Keep up the search. If they dont reach out, be gracious and choose to make this a positive learning experience. The right offer will come, often when you least expect it, and it will be worth the wait - because the company recognizes your value.Subscribe to thePunched Clocks newsletterfor more career advice from Sarah.
